Gatwick Airport Taxi & Minicab Guide

Local context, transport connections and practical details for your next cab journey.

Gatwick Airport, south of London, is Britains' second busiest airport, after Heathrow.
Gatwick Airport, south of London, is Britains' second busiest airport, after Heathrow. Until 2017 it was also the busiest single-runway airport in the world. You may notice in my picture a second runway/taxiway. It can, under certain circumstances, be used as a runway but it's too close to the main runway to be permitted to be used at the same time. In recent years the operators of the airport have been trying to get permission to expand the airport, with an additional runway, etc. However, in 2020/21 the airport (like others round the world) has seen its traffic drastically reduced thanks to the Covid pandemic. The future is uncertain. In my photo an aircraft has just taken off (and is still above the runway). It may just be visible in the photo.Mike McBey / Wikimedia Commons / CC BY 2.0 · Wikimedia Commons · CC BY 2.0

Know the Airport Connection

Gatwick has North and South terminals. Its railway station is at South Terminal, while a free inter-terminal shuttle links the two buildings. A rail arrival and a departing flight may therefore involve different terminal references.

Choose the Actual Road Journey

Put North or South Terminal into the cab enquiry after checking the flight. If combining rail with a car or meeting passengers who arrive by train, say whether the meeting is at South Terminal or after they have used the shuttle; do not leave the transfer between buildings implicit.

Flight Details, Luggage and Readiness

For a Gatwick Airport taxi or minicab enquiry, provide the flight number, date and London-time details as well as the airport destination. Explain the party size and luggage before asking the operator to confirm the vehicle. For an arrival, landing, reclaiming bags and being ready to meet are different moments; agree how readiness and any waiting will be handled.

For departure, follow the airline's check-in requirements and discuss the proposed pickup with the cab operator. Ask for the complete proposed price and airport meeting instructions before accepting a booking.

Local Taxi & Minicab Questions

Does the Gatwick Rail Station Serve Both Terminal Front Doors?

The railway station is at South Terminal. North Terminal passengers use the inter-terminal connection, so plan the final terminal step explicitly.

Can I Enter Only Gatwick for a Collection?

Include North or South Terminal, flight details and the agreed meeting instructions. The airport name alone does not identify the actual terminal where the party will emerge.

Should a North Terminal Flight Use the South Terminal Railway Address for the Cab?

Use North Terminal for the flight unless a separate rail meeting at South Terminal is intended. Keep the shuttle connection explicit when it is part of the itinerary rather than silently changing the terminal in the car request.
